DGFT wood pellets briquettes export

Notification No. 04/2026-27, Dated 06-04-2026

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has issued a notification amending the export policy under Chapter 44 of ITC (HS) 2022, Schedule 2, specifically for wood pellets and wood briquettes.

1. Change in Export Policy Classification

The revised policy introduces the following changes:

  • Wood Pellets (HS 44013100): Changed from ‘Prohibited’ to ‘Restricted’
  • Wood Briquettes (HS 44013200): Changed from ‘Free’ to ‘Restricted’

2. Requirement of Restricted Export Authorization

Exports of both items shall now be:

  • Permitted only under a Restricted Export Authorization
  • Subject to prior approval from the DGFT

This introduces regulatory control over export volumes and eligibility.

3. Effective Date

  • The revised policy is effective immediately
  • All exports must comply with the new restricted regime from the date of notification

4. Implications of the Amendment

The changes imply:

  • Tightened regulatory oversight over biomass fuel exports
  • Controlled export to balance domestic availability and international trade
  • Mandatory compliance with authorization procedures

5. Conclusion

The amendment marks a significant shift towards a regulated export framework for wood-based fuel products, requiring exporters to obtain prior authorisation and adhere to stricter policy conditions.
